I've created a scaled up version of the twine pieces around two meters tall and I found while making it that it completely changes the aesthetic value to me and I want to see how I can develop it even further. I also created some vessels that stand on there own as I have an idea to pair the vessels alongside the objects that inspire the scents that'll be inside them. I'm going to be experimenting with glazes for these pieces as I need a watertight vessel as well as it gives me a chance to bring some colour into my work. I want to look at the ceramic palettes of artists like Ron Nagle, Lindsey Mendick, Mike Byrne and Lim + Lu. Ron Nagle in particular interests me as the use of contrast, gradients and opacity in his surfaces.
Ron Nagle
Ron Nagle is known for his intimately scaled sculptures made of ceramic elements of great detail and compelling colour that are slip-cast, fired, and embellished with epoxy and other synthetic materials that allow him to expand his forms beyond the limits of clay. Some are glazed to a hot-rod finish, others textured like stucco and then airbrushed. Ron Nagle has practised ceramics for over 50 years. He has worked extensively with the typology of the vessel—specifically the cup—and pushed through the utilitarian concerns of traditional craft into formal consideration of the medium.
